Fruit Golf is an asymmetrical virtual reality (VR) game that only requires one VR headset and a mobile companion app for the whole party to play. In the world of Fruit Golf, players traverse larger-than-life mini golf themed courses, putting golf balls that have been replaced by fruit and dodging obstacles placed by their friends in real time. Fruit Golf is a social game designed for players of all ages and levels of VR experience.

Coal Car Studio is an award-winning, Vancouver-based team that is passionate about immersive media. With a focus on crafting memorable experiences, Coal Car’s team of experienced designers and developers create virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) games with a strong social component. Coal Car’s mission is to create safe virtual spaces that enable players to interact with and share VR worlds with friends and family. Using innovative technologies and game play mechanics, we will shatter the stigma that VR is an isolating experience and we will bring the joy of couch co-op back into mainstream gaming culture

History

The concept of Fruit Golf originated in 2015 after receiving an early VR developer kit about a year before it was widely available. Coal Car Studio saw a need to share the VR experience with friends and family while only having access to a single headset. The inability to do this was key in sparking the idea for Fruit Golf. While not everyone has a VR headset, most people have smartphones or tablets. To create an experience that is accessible to as many people as possible, Fruit Golf uses mobile devices as secondary controllers — so everyone can get in the action! Today, the Fruit Golf team has grown and welcomed diverse and talented team members working together towards the goal of expanding the universe of Fruit Golf to a living room near you.

Features

Fruit Golf allows spectators to fully join in on the fun. Through Magic Window style augmented reality immersion, mobile players are co-located with the VR player and see the virtual world extended into their living rooms, or wherever they happen to be playing.
With six themed VR golf courses and counting, the Fruit Golf universe is quickly expanding. The obstacles that are available to mobile players correspond to each theme too. For example, in the pirate ship course, mobile players can drop sharks, krakens, canons, and more onto the VR golfer.
Each fruit has its own physical characteristics which present unique benefits or challenges to the VR golfer when hit.
Audio is key to an immersive experience. Fruit Golf's score is an auditory delight with custom songs and sounds designed especially for the game.
Fruit Golf is a pass-and-play experience with quick, jam-packed VR sessions that will leave players of all VR experience levels wanting more.
